DIRT! THE MOVIE

THE MOVIE
![]() Dirt! The Movie is an insightful and timely film that tells the story
of the glorious and unappreciated material beneath our feet. Inspired by William Bryant Logan’s acclaimed book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, Dirt! The Movie takes a humorous and substantial look into the history and current state of the living organic matter that we come from and will later return to. Dirt! The Movie will make you want to get dirty! A look at man's relationship with Dirt. Dirt and humans couldn't be closer. We started our journey together as stardust, swirled by cosmic forces into our galaxy, solar system, and planet. We are made of the same stuff. Four billion years of evolution created dirt as the living source of all life on Earth including humans. Greetings from the Dirt Team and welcome to our new website. It’s hard to believe that it’s been three and a half years since we had our premiere at the Sundance Film Festival! Since then Dirt! The Movie has screened on PBS as its Earth Day Special in 2010; has shown in numerous festivals and events in more than 14 countries around the world (most recently the Bejing International Film Festival in April); has screened for a special soil commission for the European Union in Brussels and the European Soil and Land Alliance Convention in Germany; has found friends with such organizations as the Festival of Faiths (Sacred Soil: Foundation of Life, 2010) and Interfaith Power and Light (Sow a Cool Harvest, 2012) and even received a “Dirt! The Movie Day” proclamation from Mayor Gavin Newsom in San Francisco. These are just a selection of highlights as it would take pages to name all of our fantastic partners and alliances to properly credit their ongoing work and help to us. It has been a wild ride and we are so happy that Dirt! continues to make friends and reach people through festivals and your grass roots community screenings! We were sad that we all lost such an extraordinary force for good in Wangari Maathai last September. It is tremendously heartening that her message of inspiration and hope for the future lives on with the “I will be a hummingbird” clip from the film. The clip has also won the Best of Fest at the 2010 My Hero International Film Festival and is presently a finalist in the short film competition at the Films for the Earth Festival in Switzerland (results tomorrow!) So many of you have reached out to us and translated and subtitled the film in numerous languages in order to reach even more people with the message of Dirt! and how we can all do our part to preserve and rejuvenate this vital resource. We are so grateful for your collaboration and interest. With the new site and its outreach capabilities we hope to continue to spread the word… in fact, we’re working on a special “compost” cut to be released in the near future. If you have news to share, please contact us. And please let us know what you think of the new site in the comments section below! |
