THIS IS SPINAL TAP
(1984)
THE WORLD'S LOUDEST BAND

PRESENTER: ADIL RAY
Mockumentary, directed by Rob Reiner, written by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Rob Reiner, 1984, MGM.
Internet Movie Database:
"Marti DeBergi is a film-maker who decides to make a documentary, a rockumentary actually, about the world's loudest band, the British heavy metal group Spinal Tap. The movie is in fact a biting satire and spoof of the whole rock and roll scene that passes itself off as a real documentary of a real band. Hilarious behind-the-scenes footage is combined with faux-concert clips to breath life into the imaginary group. "
In 1992 deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry

Ever wondered how rock stars live? Well, wonder no longer. This is Spinal Tap is on my list of top comedies because it is a wild ride that satirizes the eccentric, over the top lifestyles of Rock Gods who live for sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The dialogue is great because it’s almost all ad libbed, meaning that all the nuances of speech get into the movie, unlike some alien sounding dialogue that just doesn’t flow.
Spinal Tap has David (Michael McKean), Derek (Harry Shearer) and Nigel (Christopher Guest), who sport hair almost as ridiculous as their English accents. The film is set in mockumentary style, like the Office or Trailer Park Boys, and the documentor Marty (Reiner) follows the rock gods through the trials, troubles and good times that come from rocking out. It’s rated R, which should come as no surprise, and runs bout 82 minutes long.
The band is fizzling out a little bit, and so the already over the top characters act in even more over the top ways to try and get fans back into it. Think 80 hair, metal, and ridiculousness all in English accents, and you will get a good jist of what this movie is all about. It was loved by critics and laypersons all. If you haven’t seen this movie, watching it is going to be like a light going on in your head- this film has been referenced over and over in pop culture, and you will finally be in the loop. On a scale of 1-10 for awesomeness, this R rated comedy gets an 11.
